What is a Dubai business visa? The short answer
The UAE has no separate visa called a "business visa". A business trip to Dubai uses a visit visa: either the visa on arrival that some passports get free at the airport, or a visit visa you apply for before you fly. The visit visa to explore business opportunities is the one the government designed for business visitors, and it needs no UAE sponsor.
British, American and most EU citizens do not apply in advance. Indian and Pakistani citizens usually do, although Indians who hold a US, UK or EU visa or residence permit have faster routes. A visit visa lets you attend meetings, trade shows and site visits. It does not let you work or live in the UAE: for that you need a residence visa, for example through your own company.
Do you need a visa for a business trip to Dubai?
It depends on your passport, not on the purpose of the trip. The table shows the position for the passports we are asked about most, as listed on the official pages we checked on 8 Oct 2026. The rules are the same for Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the other emirates.
| Passport | Visa before you travel? | Usual route for a business trip | Official source |
|---|---|---|---|
| India | Yes, in most cases. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists India as "visa required". | A visit visa applied for in advance, or one of the faster routes for holders of a US, UK, EU or other listed visa or residence permit (see the India section). | |
| Pakistan | Yes. MOFA lists Pakistan as "visa required". | A visit visa applied for in advance, for example the visa to explore business opportunities or a visit visa through an airline, hotel or travel agent. | |
| United Kingdom | No. A visitor visa is issued free of charge on arrival. | Visa on arrival, valid for up to 90 days over a 180-day period from your first entry. | |
| United States | No. The visa is issued on entry. | Visa on arrival, up to 90 days in total within 180 days of your first entry, not renewable. | |
| Germany, France, the Netherlands and other EU passports | No. MOFA lists these passports as "visa free". | Visa on arrival. Confirm the length of stay for your passport before a long trip. | |
| GCC countries | No. GCC citizens do not need a visa to enter the UAE. | No visa application is needed for the trip. |
Whatever your passport, u.ae says it must be valid for at least six months from the date you enter the UAE. Rules change, so check your own passport on the MOFA list or with your airline in the week you travel.

Which UAE visa covers a business trip?
Travel agents sell several different products as a "Dubai business visa". These are the official routes behind them, who applies, how long each lets you stay and whether it lets you work.
| Visa or entry route | Who it suits | Sponsor or host | Stay | Work in the UAE? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Visa on arrivalGOV.UK | Holders of visa-free passports, such as UK, US and EU citizens | None | Up to 90 days within 180 days for UK and US passports | No |
| Visit visa to explore business opportunitiesu.ae and GDRFA | Founders, investors and professionals checking out the market or meeting partners | None needed. You show proof of investment or financial solvency. | 60, 90 or 120 days, single or multiple entry | No |
| Visit visa through an airline, hotel or licensed travel agentGDRFA: tourist visa | Short trips, often sold as a "business visa" | The airline, hotel or tourism establishment | 30 or 60 days, single entry | No |
| Visit visa through a relative or friendGDRFA: relative or friend visa | Visitors with family or friends resident in Dubai | The UAE citizen or resident you visit | 30, 60 or 90 days, single entry | No |
| 5-year multiple-entry tourist visau.ae: tourist visa (updated 1 Oct 2026) | Frequent visitors who do not work in the UAE | Self-sponsored. You need a bank balance of USD 4,000 or the equivalent over the last six months. | Up to 90 days a visit, extendable once by 90 days | No |
| Residence visa through your own companyu.ae: residence visa (updated 28 Sep 2026) | People who want to live in the UAE and run their own business | Your free zone or mainland company | u.ae: 1, 2 or 3 years on a sponsored visa | Yes, for your own company |
Officially, the visa an airline or travel agent arranges is a tourist visa. If your trip is mainly business, the visit visa to explore business opportunities is the closer fit, and it does not need a host in the UAE.
Dubai business visa for Indians
Indian citizens on an ordinary passport need a visa before they travel, unless they qualify for one of the residence-permit routes below. These routes are set by the UAE. The Consulate General of India pages that rank for this search cover visas to India, not entry to the UAE.
You hold a US green card, or a UK or EU residence visa
GDRFA Dubai issues a 14-day visa on arrival to Indian citizens with an ordinary passport and a US permanent resident card or a UK or EU residence visa. It can be extended once for another 14 days. Your passport and your green card or residence visa must each be valid for at least six months. The GDRFA service page lists a government fee of AED 253.
You hold a visa or residence permit from another listed country
ICP issues a 60-day visa to Indian nationals who hold a valid visa or residence permit from the US, the EU or the UK, or a valid residence permit from Japan, South Korea, Australia, Canada, Singapore or New Zealand. You apply online before you fly. ICP lists a processing time of 2 days and a total of AED 350. GDRFA says the 60-day visa cannot be extended.
You hold neither
Apply for a visit visa before you travel. For a business trip, the visit visa to explore business opportunities needs no UAE host. For a short trip, your airline, hotel or a licensed travel agent can apply for a 30-day or 60-day visit visa for you.
Documents Indian business travellers usually need
- Passport valid for at least six months from your date of entry, with a copy of the cover and data page
- A recent colour photograph with a white background
- For the residence-permit routes: a copy of your US, UK, EU or other listed visa or residence permit, valid for at least six months
- For the explore-business visa: proof of investment or financial solvency
- A return or onward ticket and your hotel booking
- If a UAE company has invited you, its letter describing the meetings. It is not on the GDRFA list, but it helps explain your trip.
The UAE has widened the residence-permit routes for Indian nationals in recent years, which is why older guides give a shorter list of countries. The list above is the one on the ICP and GDRFA pages on 8 Oct 2026.
Dubai business visa for Pakistani nationals
Pakistani citizens need a visa before they travel: MOFA lists Pakistan as "visa required". Pakistan is not on the ICP or GDRFA lists for the residence-permit routes described above for Indian nationals, which we checked on 8 Oct 2026.
For a business trip, there are three routes. The visit visa to explore business opportunities needs no host in the UAE, but you show proof of investment and GDRFA takes a security deposit of AED 1,000. A visit visa through an airline, hotel or licensed travel agent suits a short trip. A relative or friend who is resident in Dubai can also sponsor a 30, 60 or 90-day visit visa, with their proof of residence and of your relationship.
Apply well before your flight, use the same name spelling as your passport on every document, and keep your return ticket and hotel booking ready. Each application is assessed by the immigration authority, so no agent can promise an approval.
UK, US and EU travellers: visa on arrival
With a visa-free passport you apply for nothing before a business trip: the visa is issued at immigration when you land.
British citizens
- GOV.UK says a visitor or tourist visa is issued free of charge when you arrive in the UAE.
- It is valid for up to 90 days over a 180-day period, counted from your first entry.
- Your passport needs an expiry date at least six months after the date you arrive.
- GOV.UK warns that if you are caught working on a visit visa you could get a fine or a prison sentence, and you risk deportation.
US citizens
- The UAE Embassy in Washington says US citizens do not apply before travelling: the visa is issued on entry.
- You can stay up to 90 days in total, in one stay or several, within 180 days of your first entry. The period cannot be renewed.
- Bring a passport valid for at least six months beyond your arrival and a return or onward ticket.
- The Embassy lists a fine of AED 50 for each day you stay beyond the 90 days.
EU citizens
- MOFA lists Germany, France, the Netherlands and the other EU passports we checked as "visa free". The length of stay depends on your passport, so confirm it with GDRFA or the UAE embassy in your country before a long trip.
US readers: our guide for Americans covers the entry rules in more detail, the current US travel advisory and the path to residence. Do Americans need a visa for Dubai?
How to apply for a Dubai business visa, step by step
If you need a visa before you travel, these are the steps in order. Visa-free travellers only need step 1 and step 6.
- 1
Check your passport
Find your nationality on the MOFA visa exemptions list and make sure your passport is valid for at least six months from your date of entry.
- 2
Choose the route that fits the trip
The explore-business visa for a trip without a host, the Indian residence-permit routes if you qualify, or a visit visa through your airline, hotel, travel agent or a relative or friend in Dubai.
- 3
Prepare the documents
A passport copy, a colour photo with a white background and, depending on the route, proof of investment, a copy of your foreign residence permit or your sponsor's documents. Scan them clearly: a blurred copy can mean a request to resubmit.
- 4
Apply online or in person
For Dubai, apply on the GDRFA website or app, or at an Amer centre. For the other emirates and federal services, use ICP smart services. u.ae says tourist visas can also be applied for through airlines, licensed travel agents or hotels.
- 5
Pay the government fee and any deposit
The fee depends on the visa and how long it lasts; the cost table below lists the official figures. Some visas also need a security deposit. GDRFA lists an expected completion time of 48 hours for its visit visas once a complete application is in, so allow a few working days before you book.
- 6
Travel and pass immigration
Carry your e-visa, your return ticket, your hotel booking and a copy of any invitation letter.
- 7
Stay within your visa
Meetings, trade shows, viewing offices and talks with a free zone are what business visitors typically do. Working in the UAE, or staying past your exit date, breaks the terms of a visit visa. If you decide to set up a company during the trip, the residence visa comes after the licence.
What does a Dubai business visa cost?
Government fees, as listed on the official service pages on 8 Oct 2026. Travel agents and airlines add their own service charges to these.
| Visa | Government fee | Authority |
|---|---|---|
| Visa on arrival, British passport | Free of charge | GOV.UK |
| Visit visa to explore business opportunities (60, 90 or 120 days) | AED 200, 300 or 400, plus 5% VAT. Security deposit AED 1,000, plus a deposit service fee of AED 20 and a collection or refund fee of AED 40. | GDRFA Dubai |
| Single-entry visit visa through a tourism establishment (30 or 60 days) | AED 200 or 300, plus 5% VAT. No security deposit. | GDRFA Dubai |
| Visit visa through a relative or friend (30, 60 or 90 days) | AED 200, 300 or 400, plus 5% VAT and medical insurance of AED 40, 60 or 90. Security deposit AED 1,000. | GDRFA Dubai |
| 14-day visa on arrival for Indian citizens with a US green card or a UK or EU residence visa | AED 253 | GDRFA Dubai |
| 60-day visa for Indian nationals with a listed foreign visa or residence permit | AED 350 (AED 250 issue fee plus AED 100 smart services fee) | ICP |
- GDRFA adds AED 500 to several of these visas if you apply from inside the UAE.
- Fees change without notice. The authority's own service page on the day you apply is the figure that counts.
- First Idea Consultant does not sell visit visas. Apply through GDRFA, ICP, your airline, your hotel or a licensed travel agent. We come in when the trip turns into a company and a residence visa.
Mistakes that delay a Dubai business visa
- Travelling on a passport with less than six months left. Airlines may check it before you board, not only immigration in Dubai.
- Booking non-refundable flights before the visa is issued. Wait for the approval, or book a fare you can change.
- Using a different spelling of your name on the ticket, the hotel booking and the application. Copy it from your passport exactly.
- Assuming an old guide is still right. The residence-permit routes for Indian nationals have changed more than once, so check the ICP or GDRFA page in the week you apply.
- Treating a visit visa as permission to work. Working in Dubai for a UAE client or employer needs a licence or an employer, and a residence visa.
- Overstaying by a few days. Fines run per day: the UAE Embassy in Washington lists AED 50 for each extra day on a US visa on arrival.
When you need a residence visa instead
A visit visa is for visiting. As soon as you want to work in the UAE, invoice UAE clients from a UAE company or live there for most of the year, you need a residence visa. It is sponsored by an employer, by a family member who is resident, or by your own company as its owner or partner.
u.ae says a sponsored residence visa is issued for 1, 2 or 3 years, that applicants aged 18 and over take a medical test, and that every resident applies for an Emirates ID. A resident who stays outside the UAE for more than 180 days in a row loses the visa automatically, but u.ae lists investors holding valid residence visas among the exceptions.
If you work alone, a free zone freelance permit can be an alternative to a full company. Whether it fits depends on your activity, so ask before you choose.
Our Standard package covers a free zone company with one residence visa, the medical, the Emirates ID and corporate tax registration: AED 23,136 at Meydan or AED 23,436 at IFZA. Both totals include a promotional professional fee.
Setting up a company while on a visit visa
Many founders start on a business trip: they meet free zones, compare costs and decide in Dubai. You can apply for the licence while you are visiting, or from home. The residence visa then follows the company, not the other way round.
Meydan Free Zone sets out the order: choose the licence and activity, register the company, apply for the establishment card and open an immigration file, then submit the investor visa application with the medical test and Emirates ID. Meydan says its process is typically completed within 5 to 10 working days, depending on approvals.
The establishment card is the step people miss. It registers your company with immigration, and no residence visa can be filed until the company has one. It is part of our Standard package.
If you are already in the UAE on a visit visa when the company is ready, ask about an inside-country status change, an optional extra of AED 1,600 on our price sheet, so you may not need to leave and re-enter.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Dubai business visa?
It is the everyday name for a visit visa used for a business trip; the UAE issues no visa called a "business visa". UK and US passports get a visa on arrival. Other travellers apply in advance, usually for the visit visa to explore business opportunities, which needs no UAE sponsor.
Do Indians need a business visa for Dubai?
Yes, unless they qualify for a residence-permit route. Indian citizens with a US green card or a UK or EU residence visa can get a 14-day visa on arrival (GDRFA fee AED 253). Indian nationals with a visa or residence permit from the US, the UK, the EU, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Canada, Singapore or New Zealand can apply online for a 60-day visa (ICP total AED 350). Everyone else applies for a visit visa before travelling.
Do Pakistani citizens need a visa for Dubai business trips?
Yes. MOFA lists Pakistan as "visa required", and Pakistan is not on the residence-permit visa lists we checked on 8 Oct 2026. Apply before you travel for the visit visa to explore business opportunities, a visit visa through an airline, hotel or licensed travel agent, or a visit visa through a relative or friend resident in Dubai.
Can UK and US citizens get a visa on arrival in Dubai?
Yes. GOV.UK says British citizens get a visitor visa free of charge on arrival, valid for up to 90 days over a 180-day period. The UAE Embassy in Washington says US citizens get a visa on entry for up to 90 days within 180 days, which cannot be renewed. Both need a passport valid for at least six months.
How long does a Dubai business visa take?
GDRFA lists an expected completion time of 48 hours for its visit visas, and ICP lists 2 days for the 60-day visa for Indian nationals, once a complete application is in. Allow a few working days before you book flights. A visa on arrival is issued when you land.
How much is a Dubai business visa?
Government fees on 8 Oct 2026: the GDRFA visa to explore business opportunities costs AED 200, 300 or 400 for 60, 90 or 120 days, plus 5% VAT and a AED 1,000 security deposit. A 30-day or 60-day visit visa through a tourism establishment costs AED 200 or 300 plus VAT. The visa on arrival is free for British citizens. Agents add their own charges.
Can I work in Dubai on a business visa?
No. A visit visa covers meetings, trade shows and site visits, not work. GOV.UK warns that working on a visit visa can lead to a fine, a prison sentence and deportation. To work in the UAE you need a residence visa, sponsored by an employer or by your own company.
Can I set up a company in Dubai on a visit visa?
Yes. You can register a free zone company while visiting, or from home. Once the licence and the establishment card are issued, the company can sponsor your residence visa. If you are still in the UAE at that point, an inside-country status change may mean you do not need to leave and re-enter.
